Effects of micronutrient fertilization on soil carbon pools and microbial community functioning

چکیده

Fertilization with macronutrients, e.g., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), has wide-ranging well-characterized effects on terrestrial ecosystem functions. In contrast, influences of other elements, sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), hereafter, ‘micronutrients’, are poorly understood. To determine micronutrients, their interactions soil carbon (C) cycling, we conducted a full factorial experiment where treatments consisted fertilizing experimental plots Na, Ca, K (each manipulated individually) macronutrients (N + P added together). Each year the measured aboveground plant biomass sampled soils to quantify mineralizable C pools active microbial biomass. further explore micronutrient microbial-mediated in final assessed cycle functions using catabolic profiling technique quantified multiple additional pools: particulate (POM-C), mineral-associated (MAOM-C), total (TC). Macronutrients P) affected nearly all variables – when N was added, increased, profiles were altered, C, POM-C, TC increased. Micronutrients also had cycling that generally smaller than Ca addition reduced relative increased POM-C pools. Further, altered profiles, but only added. Our study reveals several micronutrients specifically, may influence size by influencing communities.

Modelling tillage and nitrogen fertilization effects on soil organic carbon

1 Agricultural management plays an important role in global warming mitigation due to 2 its effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. In Mediterranean agroecosystems, 3 the interactive effects of tillage and N fertilization on SOC storage have scarcely been 4 studied. Hence, we here present a modelling study in which the effects of both tillage 5 and N fertilization on SOC dynamics are inv...

Relating microbial community structure to functioning in forest soil organic carbon transformation and turnover

Forest soils store vast amounts of terrestrial carbon, but we are still limited in mechanistic understanding on how soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization or turnover is controlled by biotic and abiotic factors in forest ecosystems. We used phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) as biomarker to study soil microbial community structure and measured activities of five extracellular enzymes involved in...

Long-term fertilization alters chemically-separated soil organic carbon pools: Based on stable C isotope analyses

Quantification of dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) pools under the influence of long-term fertilization is essential for predicting carbon (C) sequestration. We combined soil chemical fractionation with stable C isotope analyses to investigate the C dynamics of the various SOC pools after 25 years of fertilization. Five types of soil samples (0-20, 20-40 cm) including the initial level (CK...

Soil and plant effects on microbial community structure.

We investigated the effects of two different plant species (corn and soybean) and three different soil types on microbial community structure in the rhizosphere. Our working hypothesis was that the rhizosphere effect would be strongest on fast-growing aerobic heterotrophs, while there would be little or no rhizosphere effect on oligotrophic and other slow-growing microorganisms. Culturable bact...
